This painting, depicting Courbet's sisters, Zo, Zie and Juliette giving alms to a girl cowherd, belongs to Courbet's realist works which earned him the soubriquet of the "Watteau of the ugly" from Thphile Gautier. It was exhibited at the Salon of 1852 and was bought by the duc de Morny, half-brother to Napoleon III.
